Microsoft, Hyundai cooperate on tech

Microsoft Corporation, the world’s biggest software maker, said that Hyundai Motor Company and affiliate Kia Motors Corporation would become the first Asian automakers to use its in-car entertainment application.

Korea’s two biggest carmakers will introduce the Microsoft system in North America from 2010, the companies said in a PRNewswire statement yesterday. The first product will enable drivers to control different mobile devices with their voice. Later upgrades will include multimedia and navigation systems.Microsoft has developed products for cars, mobile phones and gaming consoles to expand beyond personal and business computing, its traditional focus.

Ford Motor Company and Fiat SpA already use the Redmond, Washington-based software-maker’s automotive system.

Hyundai Motor Group and Microsoft will also invest a combined $279 million in a research center in Korea to develop software for cars, according to a statement from the country’s presidential office yesterday. The automakers’ contribution will total $166 million, it said.

I guess this would be like small computer in a car. Anyhow, as a car user, I hope interesting devices can be invented in the near future. Of course, with reasonable and affordable price.
