EBay to Open up Merchant Tool to Developers

EBay will open a tool to external developers, the next step in an ongoing effort to promote the creation of applications for its online marketplace. The tool, Selling Manager is used to manage their eBay listings by 700,000 of its merchants. Selling Manager is the most popular tool among eBay merchants, but so far has only featured applications created by the company.
Now eBay wants to meet all of its user’s demands and requirements, the tool will be turned into an open platform, Max Mancini said. He is eBay’s senior director of mobile platform and disruptive innovation.

I guess that the goal of eBay to try to help external developers be more productive will stimulate the growth of online marketplace.

An article as below is the introduction of eBay’s efforts.

Though I don't exactly understand why the ebay sell the tool, manager, and help developers.
As you already mentioned, I also agree with that ebay wnat to grow the online marketplace and control their applicant, and eventually want to strenghten their market share.
