Nintendo sues wireless Wii controller maker

There have been a slew of Third Party peripherals popping up all over the places thanks to the immense popularity of Nintendo’s Wii, with wireless Nunchuks being quite the popular choice amongst companies. However, it would appear that Nintendo is not best pleased with manufacturer Nyko, since it has just filed a lawsuit against the company that has been producing one of the many wireless Nunchuks.
In response, Nyko spokesman C.C. Swiney said in a recent telephone interview with Bloomberg News that “We have not knowingly violated anyone’s intellectual property and we’re still examining this.”
Nyko Technologies, which is based in the heart of Los Angeles, is the maker of numerous other accessories on the Wii, such as the extremely popular charging station for the Wii Remotes (that reportedly damages your controllers over time), a carrying case for the Wii itself, as well as various types of adapter. The Kama Nunchuk is advertised as avoiding the “restrictive wires” of the Nintendo Nunchuk, and weighs in at a very reasonable US$33.99 on websites such as Amazon.com.
If Nintendo gets its way, and it is deemed that Nyko has indeed infringed on two design patents and trademarks, then the court will issue an order to Nyko in order to stop the sale of any more wireless controller products, as well as giving financial compensation to Nintendo for the inconvenience caused by consumers purchasing this rather than the US$19.99 official Nunchuk attachment.
Does Nintendo deserve to win this court battle, or is the company simply being too power hungry? Be sure to air your thoughts on the matter by posting below…
