WIKIPEDIA vs. Britannica

Reference: Weekly Biz, Chosun Daily newspaper 26-27 April 2008

Cover Story, Jimmy Wales - founder of Wikipedia

I use quite frequently Wikipedia.
Wikepedia surely is a IT revolution based on knowledge of this new Millenium. This even led a birth of a word 'Wikinomics'. This is also a symbol of new knowledge against the conventional one represented by Britannica.

In the interview with Chosun Ilbo, Jimmy Wales said there is no absolute knowledge. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia with discussion(or even dispute, i guess) There is no ad, no revenue from Wikipedia. Wikipedia is run only by donations. From the very moment when Wiki seeks for 'interest', uses will leave, Wales said. Interesting point and i agree with him.

One of word he mentioned was ' collaboration'.
Wales said that people have fun in the course of doing something meaningful for the community and society. (This is morelike 'Theory Y' isn't it?) Many people worry qbout internet vandalism, however, most of uses of Wikipedia are the ones with reason.

I like "wiki" because it sound cool first of all and it has some philosophy in it. YOU could be the one to make, update ... even delete (I am not sure for this in Wikipedia) information for the good. I have experienced that I was a member of one of cyber community. Now I left that community because the interest of that community was not different with mine, which gave me distrust on that site. From this my experience, I realize that the fundamental thing in cyber space is trust among members. As soon as trust based cyber relationship is broken, all is over. So underneath the “wiki” philosophy, there should be always trust building among people connected by cyber space.

Such as Mr. Nam mentioned, I like this wikipedia. Sometime these wiki~~(blabla)s’, for example, wikitecture, wikipedia and wikinomics, are so powerful to our life like completing report, searching some information for writing, programming, etc.. Calling Wikinomics, future society might need collective intelligence for existing in business, life, and R&D, etc.
